Recruiting Quick Update on Lacaster OT Joseph Amos

Cougars Den's Baileigh Sheffield caught up with Lancaster (TX) offensive tackle Joseph Amos for a quick recruiting update and we've got the latest for you.

Offers

Amos has 16 offers including Georgia Tech, Hawaii, Houston, Kansas, North Texas, SMU, Southern Miss and Wyoming to name a few.

Timeline

Amos told Sheffield that he has no set timeline on a commitment and will likely decide sometime after the season on a team that he feels is an overall good fit.

The Scoop

Amos tells Cougars Den that he really wants to get out of the state of Texas. The Cougars have been one of the schools recruiting him the hardest and coach Brandon Jones has been the one recruiting him the most. The Cougars have been pitching early playing time if he continues to work hard. Georgia Tech is another school that's been recruiting the Lancaster product pretty heavily.

Amos has continued to work out from home during Covid-19 and goes to the park every night to run.

He told us he does not prefer to go to school in Houston and expressed a desire to leave the state, but he did note that he does like the Houston program and offensive line coach Brandon Jones. He also said that Houston would get consideration when it came time to committing, but at this point it really feels like Houston may have a lot of work cut out for them given Amos' desire to attend school out of state. But the Cougars have traditionally recruited Lancaster well so I wouldn't necessarily rule them out just yet.

Recruiting 2022 Pelican State RB Talks UH Offer

Houston got in early on Baton Rouge (LA) University High running back Derrick Graham. The Cougars are one of only two offers for the talented Louisiana product. Virginia is the other school on his short offer list.

"Things have been a little slow but okay," Graham said of the recruiting process.

Thoughts on the UH Offer

"Really honored and blessed first of all and it shows that hard work does pay
off."

"Coach Dawson saw my film and some of my recent workout videos and liked them. We spoke about how I got the name Rodeo”, my family, and little bit about Houston. And he really liked what he saw and decided to offer me."

In regards to that nickname, Graham's peers called him that due to his love of horses and participation in team roping events.

"A couple of years ago before it all started, I was on the way to look at horses and stopped by a Walmart to get something and they had a little football sign up out front. The guy I now know as Coach Dan asked me if I wanted to play and that they would let me bring my horses to the field. I said cool, so when I started playing is when the name started and that’s what everybody came to know me by ever since. My love for riding horses, team roping, and doing football has called for the name 'Rodeo' stick with me."

It's still very early and Graham says his recruitment is wide open, that no teams have really emerged as leaders yet. With Houston being a recent offer, if they push they could jump out to an early lead.

Graham has yet to visit any campuses, but has two visits in mind once on-campus visits are given the okay by the NCAA.

"I know Houston and Virginia for sure will be my first two visits. But, the schools that show the most interest in me, would be the ones I would want to visit."

On What He's Looking For

"First and foremost my major (Physical Therapy or Veterinary Medicine). For football a program that utilizes all phases of the game from the running back position (running, catching, blocking). Playing safety would also be a possibility."

For a 2022 prospect it's still very early in the process. Graham has no timetable on his decision but did say the earliest he would likely commit would be toward the end of his junior year.

Recruiting Humble's Robert Williams One to Watch

The Houston Cougars recently offered Humble (TX) WR Robert Williams and his close proximity to campus and familiarity with not only UH but the city of Houston make him an interesting name to keep an eye on as the 2021 cycle moves on.

Covid-19 has certainly changed the landscape of college recruiting this spring and we very well could see that extended into the summer months as well but Williams continues to enjoy the process and says this unique situation has afforded him more time to research each school recruiting him.

"It’s been good but bad because all the craziness", Willians said of the Covid-19 situation. "But it’s good bc I have more time to talk and learn more about each school and coach."

"The recruiting process has been crazy these past few weeks I’ve been talking to a lot of coaches," he added.

Williams holds three offers currently from Houston, Louisiana Tech and Texas State.

"The schools that have been recruiting me the hardest is Texas state and UofH because I have full convos with those school often and I have talked to more than one of the coaches on the coaching staffs."

Houston's staff has taken a personable approach with Williams' recruitment and so far it seems to be paying off.

"My relationship with Houston is wonderful it’s a lot of great things we talk about and they are real cool guys almost like they're not recruiting me they’re just my friends."

Williams doesn't have any visits lined up and given the current landscape of recruiting who knows when that can change, but he did tell us that he will definitely be looking forward to visiting both Houston and Texas State once things return to normal.

As far as a decision timeline don't expect anything soon. According to Williams his decision likely won't come until sometime during his senior year.

One of Houston's newest offers was to Edinburg (TX) Robert Vela offensive tackle Ronnie Garza.

Cougarsden chatted with Garza following his offer as the 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive lineman shared his thoughts on the recruiting process and more.

On The Recruiting Process

"Well, it's been going well I'd like to say," Garza told Cougarsden.com. "I haven't been able to have any face to face interactions with coaches but I don't mind the calls and texts."

Garza tells us that UTSA, Houston, Arkansas State, Texas Tech and Texas State are the schools currently recruiting him the hardest.

On Houston

"I talk to Coach Brandon Jones the most, he’s a great man and a great coach. They have been very kind to me."

Garza has already had visits to Rice and Texas Tech and as soon as the NCAA gives the greenlight for on campus visits he plans to visit Houston, UTSA and Texas State as well as any new suitors that may enter the discussion.

On What He's Looking For

"I'm looking for a home away from home. Somewhere I can be comfortable and be like a second family, because that’s the way I see my football team now."

Garza tells us he has no timeline on when he Hopes to have a decision finalized, it really just comes down to how comfortable he is and what feels right, but no specific timeframe is there.

Analysis: DB commitment Mark Wilson

Stopping by to give some thoughts on talented three-star Clear Lake (Texas) DB Mark Wilson, who committed to Houston over the weekend

From a recruiting standpoint, Wilson had a strong sophomore campaign and good junior year, which led to offers from Houston, Vanderbilt, SMU, Kansas, Baylor, and interest from TCU, Texas, LSU and Texas A&M. Wilson had more spring visit plans, but that was obviously canceled by the coronavirus travel shutdown.

I liked Wilson enough to give him a high three-star grade in our initial 2021 rankings. Like I mentioned before, a little underwhelming as a junior but plenty of positives to take into account.

Analysis:

Wilson is a smaller, thinner safety (6-foot, 170 pounds) that can play multiple roles in the secondary -- a high safety or a nickel in three-, four-DB sets. He certainly has the physical skills to shift out to corner down the road, too.

I like Wilson's ability against the run. He covers a ton of ground in a short period of time, and while we hope to get a verified 40 or track time for him at some point this offseason, on film he plays with a chip on his shoulder and is a force to be reckoned with vs. the run. He's very physical and his HS coaches use him in a multitude of ways to take advantage of that trait -- whether it's run blitzes or coverage blitzes to get Wilson close or at the LOS and attacking ball-carriers and QBs as well.

At safety, Wilson plays well over the top and routinely attacks the ball in mid-air. Shows a lot about his coverage skills at safety or if he were to transition out to CB. In certain plays, at corner, Wilson displays nice hip flexion and the ability to turn-and-run and shadow WR across the field. Very versatile piece.

Great trait for DB is positioning themselves well on the field. Wilson does this often. Smart football player with high on-field IQ.

The only questions we have about Wilson is, of course, his actual speed. It does not seem to be an issue often in coverage or in the return game. Wilson does not burn defenders, but he is dangerous in the open field and that physicality shows in that aspect. So does his vision of the field.
