I attended my first UH athletic contest, as the Cougars, led by sophomore Elvin Hayes, came back to beat the 10th-ranked Providence Friars and the nation's leading scorer, Jimmy Walker, by 102-89. Of course Delmar was packed, and this was the game that put the country on notice about E and the team. I recall the starting lineup as being Elvin, Don Chaney, Joe Hamood, Leary Lentz, and left-handed sharpshooter Wayne Ballard. I was a sophomore in high school and grew up hearing and reading mostly about the SWC schools but that was the day I decided UH was going to be my school.
