Houston just picked up the commitment of Helotes (TX) O'Connor three-star cornerback Zaire Taylor who gave the Cougars his pledge this evening to keep this incredible string of commitments rolling.
Taylor picked Houston over other offers from New Mexico, Texas State, SMU, Purdue and Army.
Houston defensive backs coach Clay Jennings really likes size and length and the cornerback position, outside linebackers coach Dan Carrel is the coach that recruits the San Antonio area and really came away impressed with Taylor's tools in a visit to O'Connor earlier this spring. That's basically when everything started. Taylor visited campus once during the spring and is a pretty solid match with what Houston looks for at the cornerback position both skill wise and physically.
At 6-foot-1, 187-pounds Taylor possesses the size that Houston seeks. He's physical enough to play bump and run and athletic enough for man to man. Can play on the edge or against the slot at nickel back, though he would likely project better on the outside at the next level. He shows great reaction and is more than capable as a run defender. Has the talent to where he could slide in at safety if needed. O'Connor utilizes him a lot in press man coverage where he really excels at the high school level. He's got the tools that fit what Houston is looking for. Another solid get for Houston.
