Houston kicked off it's first camp of the camp circuit Monday night hosting a mini camp at TDECU Stadium. Camp kicked off at 6pm and there were roughly 300 prospects in attendance ranging from 9th grade freshmen all the way up to JUCO.
A New Element to Watch for in the Future
I think the rules have recently changed in regards to camping, because previously there were never JUCO students at camps, but now they have the ability to participate in camps. It is a new dynamic in the world of JUCO recruiting that could help programs like Houston that frequent the JUCO ranks for immediate depth.
Camp Layout
The camp layout was similar to previous events inside TDECU. They had a lounge area set up where players and family could linger, though the majority of the families and on-lookers watched from the seats of TDECU.
Registration kicked off at 5pm, players went through measurables like height and weight, wingsman, all that and once camp got under way they started off by warming up. They then ran a 40 yard-dash, participated in broad jump and ran individual position drills, then competed against other campers in one-on-ones.
With 300 prospects in attendance we won't name them all but here are the top names that were in attendance Monday night.
Notable Onlookers
Missouri City (TX) three-star linebacker Kenneth Murray was on hand checking out the camp and interacting with other prospects and members of the 2016 class.
2016 Signees on Hand
There was a group of 2016 signees that were on hand. Not sure if the whole group made it in or not but I saw a good number of them including Ed Oliver, Collin Wilder, Dixie Wooten, Aymiel Fleming and Keenan Murphy. I'm sure there were more that I didn't see.
2017 Commitments on Hand
Alex Duke is the headliner here as he was the lone participant at camp, the others were just onlookers checking out the scene but Derek Parish was on hand along with Marqez Bimage who made the trip from Brenham, Parker Eichenberger and Terrel Bernard were also on hand. Marcus is pretty confident that he saw Carlos Grace in attendance as well, but I was unable to confirm that one personally.
A couple standouts from Camp
No surprise here really that Rivals three-star defensive end and current Houston commit Alex Duke was one of the top performers at camp. Duke looked very athletic in his drills, he looks a little undersized but should be able to add more weight once he hits campus.
Duke performed very well in the one-on-one drills and beat just about everybody that matched up with him though he did get a nice stiff challenge from Samuel Cosmi of Atascocita who was a surprise along the offensive line and could be a name to watch down the line.
Wide receiver Jaelon Darden was very athletic and consistently created separation in one-on-one drills. Darden is considered a sleeper for the 2017 class. He's a bit undersized but has plenty of athletic ability to be a successful receiver at the next level. He'll be another guy worth tracking as the process moves forward.
A Surprise from Camp
There were reports from camp during the skills testing that someone ran a 4.3 forty-yard dash. I have been able to confirm that 2017 Stafford (TX) running back Cameron Montgomery ran an unofficial 4.32 at camp.
Montgomery is another "Sleeper" prospect that has been flying a little under the radar. He does have an offer from Army and could be a guy that could garner a bit more attention with a successful senior season.
He's a member of the state champion track team at Stafford and has been clocked as low as a 10.43 in the 100-meter.
