Houston held their second and third camps on the road this week starting this morning with their North Metroplex camp that was held at Coppell High School in conjunction with Texas A&M, following that up with a short two hour road trip a little further east to Kilgore High School where they hosted their East Texas camp.

Again this camp featured the same tone as the others with both high school prospects and JUCO prospects.

Camp Layouts

Nothing different here. Players entered registration, did their measurables, etc. These two camps were pretty much an identical clone to the one they had on Thursday in terms of layout splitting out workouts by position group on two separate fields, one being a pretty nice indoor practice facility, especially for High School standards at the North Metroplex Camp in Coppell.

Coaches in Attendance

Both Texas A&M and Houston had the same exact staff in attendance for the North Metroplex camp, while A&M added coaching staff for the East Texas Camp that put them at just about full staff for the camp in Kilgore.

Camp Standouts

One noteworthy name on hand for the quarterback position was Frisco (TX) Lone Star quarterback Jason Shelley who had a pretty solid camp.

One of the top players of the entire camp circuit this week was Allen (TX) running back Kirby Bennett who is a big name to watch for 2018. Bennett was the top running back on hand this week. He not only passed the "eyeball" test but ran really well as well making some smooth cuts. The coaching staff often used him as an example to the other running backs when teaching the other backs what to do during drills.

The 6-foot, 195-pound Bennett is a Rivals four-star back and will be one of the top running backs in the state of Texas next season and should really see his recruitment take off, especially if he has more strong camps like he did at Coppell today. He was easily the best offensive prospect at camp this week. Bennett holds offers from Ole Miss, SMU and Colorado.

Along the offensive line the biggest performer out of the North Metroplex camp was Allen (TX) offensive guard Will Sherman who's a Rivals three-star for the class of 2017. Sherman was the most impressive offensive lineman from the two camps today. He was the only lineman that could block another standout in Bobby Brown.

He holds offers from Houston, Arkansas State, Cal, Colorado, Kansas State, Nevada, New Mexico, Tulsa, Illinois and UTSA.

Defensively there were two names that really stood out. One being 2018 Lucas (TX) Lovejoy linebacker Bumper Pool who holds offers from Baylor, SMU, Arkansas and Alabama. Pool was one of my top two defenders from the camp at Coppell and if he wasn't already on Houston's radar before, I fully expect he'll be on their radar after the performance he put together at camp today.

If you haven't already seen his highlights, check out Pool's highlights below.

Another defensive standout was Arlington (TX) Lamar defensive end Bobby Brown, who was one of my top performers at both camps regardless of position. Brown ran well and absolutely shined in one on ones dominating the competition. He probably took 15-20 reps of one on one and maybe got beat once (by Will Sherman). He picked up offers from both staffs today as Houston and Texas A&M offered him.

He's a 2018 prospect and as of now he only holds five offers from Houston, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas and Texas A&M. I think his offer list will explode before the start of his senior year. I think by this time next year he'll probably have 15 offers or more. We'll have more on Brown coming soon.

Notable Onlooker

One of the bigger names at the East Texas camp in Kilgore came from the sidelines as Nacogdoches (TX) defensive back Josh Thompson was on hand, not as a participant but just to watch and check things out.

"I've just been going through the process and taking my time to get to know all the coaches,"he said.

Thompson is going to be visiting campus tomorrow so he wanted to get a little more familiar with the Houston staff before making the trip down to Houston on Saturday.

"I just wanted to come out here and see the coaches vibes with the players and see how they coach, just experience the atmosphere. I'm going up there tomorrow for a visit, so I'll be at UH tomorrow."

Thompson says that Houston is one of the schools recruiting him the hardest and he's interested to learn more about the program during his visit tomorrow.

Greg Ward

I kept hearing that Greg Ward was supposed to swing by and make an appearance at camp, in Kilgore but I never saw him, so I'm not sure if he showed up or not. If he was there, I am not able to confirm that. But there were a lot of people there, so it's possible I may have missed him in the shuffle.
