HOUSTON – San Jacinto Junior college center Chris Harris Jr. became the newest member of the University of Houston Men’s Basketball program when he signed a National Letter of Intent, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson announced Thursday.
Harris, who is a Houston native, measures 6-foot-10 and weighs 250 pounds. He will have three years of eligibility remaining with the 2017-18 season.
“Chris has come a long way from when we first signed him. At 6-foot-10 and 250 pounds, he will develop into a good rebounder and has the potential to have an outstanding collegiate career,” Sampson said. “Chris gives our frontcourt size, athleticism and a rim protector.”
In 2016-17, Harris competed for San Jacinto Head Coach Scott Gernander. He averaged 5.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and connected on 57.6 percent (87-of-151) of his shots from the field.
Harris scored 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds in a win at Northwest Florida State College and posted 12 points with nine rebounds in a win at Coastal Bend College.
Before competing in junior college, Harris was an award-winning player at Madison High School for Head Coach Craig Maura. As a senior during the 2014-15 season, Harris was named to the TABC Class 5A All-State Team and was recognized as the District 20-5A Defensive Player of the Year.
A member of the Houston Chronicle All-Greater Houston Third Team, Harris scored a game-high 26 points with 10 rebounds and seven blocks in an 83-70 win over Yates High School, snapping a 114-game district winning streak.
Harris joins Klein Forest High School forward Cedrick Alley Jr.; Mansfield Lake Ridge High School guard Mike Adewunmi; Saddleback Junior College Breaon Brady; San Jacinto Junior College guard Corey Davis; Three Rivers Community College forward Gabe Grant; Atascocita High School forward Fabian White Jr.; and LIU Brooklyn graduate transfer forward Nura Zanna in the Cougars’ signing class.
