I've been blessed to know most of the folks that started UH athletics on its journey. And so many of them are or were extremely colorful.
I got to thinking about this when I mentioned El Gordo's dad in another thread. Until I met Hogan, I had always said that Tom was my most unforgettable character. But Hogan was in a class by himself. (Tom is like Pele or Michael. No need for a last name to identify him among the faithful.)
But this story is not about Hogan or Tom. I was reminded of it because the Eagles were in concert here last week. it's about another colorful Cougar character: Charlie Brown, father of Chuck LouAnn and Billy Ray. Charlie just turned 82.
So, when Billy Ray was still playing on the tour, Charlie joined him to play in some pro-am event somewhere. At some point, Billy Ray introduced Charlie to Glen Frye and told him that he was with the Eagles. As Billy Ray tells it, Charlie was uncharacteristically quiet for a few moments and finally asked Frye: "Are you the kicker? 'cause you’re not big enough to play anything else."
Classic.
