Saturday 12/15 Update
I'm hearing that things are still looking promising from the FSU side of things in their efforts to hire Briles. But based on what I'm hearing I'm not expecting an official announcement anytime soon. Also hearing that Briles is likely to stay with Houston through the bowl game and is planning to coach the bowl game, which could be another one of the delays on the FSU side.
Friday 12/14 Update
Hey guys, just wanted to give you a quick update on where things stand with Briles and FSU. Things have slowed a lot since Wednesday and there really hasn't been a lot of info circulating about it. My contacts haven't had anything new to add since the last update. My FSU contacts have said everything has been held close to the vest, if anything is happening Taggart and FSU are doing a really fine job at keeping it out of the limelight.
I think the biggest hold up is the fact that Briles wants to bring one to two people with him. We've confirmed that he wants to take Randy Clements with him whether it was to Tennessee or to FSU. That one was kind of expected, there was mention of a third staffer which we've updated previously. Still haven't heard a specific name confirmed but I still suspect it may be UCF quarterbacks coach Jeff Lebby. My thought is that a lot of the stall pertains to Briles wanting to bring one to two people with him and there are a lot of things that would have to be worked out before anything became official with buyouts, what to do about current members of Taggart's staff etc...
Warchant.com publisher Gene seems to believe that if doesn't happen very soon it may be a while before word is official.
My FSU contacts still feel pretty good that Briles will be FSU's next offensive coordinator, there just hasn't been much news to add on top of what we've already put out.
One thing I can add, is that I was told Briles hasn't missed a day of practice yet. So there's that. He was also out and about last weekend decked out in UH gear recruiting for Houston at some of the state playoff games. So even though he may in fact ultimately be FSU bound, he's not exactly "Mailing it in" down the stretch.
We'll continue to keep our finger on the pulse of things and update you as we have more. But that's the latest we have as of now.
