The Third Ward Advancing Community Engagement Institute
Dr. Khator has directed the UH College of Education (COE) to work closely with Houston Independent School District (HISD) to establish the Third Ward Community Schools Partnership targeting four elementary schools (Blackshear, Hartsfield, Thompson and Foster), Cullen Middle school, and Jack Yates Sr. High School. Her goal is to bring these schools rating up from “improvement required” to “standards met” in three years.
As part of the initiative, the UH COE has received a grant for a $1.3 million from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) of the Department of Commerce to establish the Third Ward Advancing Community Engagement Institute. The funds will be used for the construction of a building located on a university owned lot. The University has provided a lot on Leek St., near the intersection of Cullen Blvd. and Elgin for the UH-ACE facility. This new 4,000+/- GSF building will allow hundreds of graduate and undergraduate students to contribute to the improvement of these schools and the community through activities guided by COE faculty.
