Records Fall at Indoor Opener
Isaac Williams; Damon Thompson shatter top marks
HOUSTON - Junior hurdler Isaac Williams and sophomore thrower Damon Thompson set new school records, and the Houston Cougar men's and women's track and field teams took home eight individual titles and 24 top-3 finishes at the Houston Indoor Opener, on Friday.
Thompson started Houston's winning ways early in the day when he threw a personal best, and new school record 19.10m (62'8.0") to win the men's weight throw. The Missouri City native's previous best was over a meter shorter at 18.08m set at the Leonard Hilton Memorial in 2014.
Williams flirted with the 60m hurdles record, which he previously shared with Darius Pemberton and Andrew Carruthers (7.81), in the preliminaries and the semifinals racing a 7.83 and 7.82 respectively, before clocking a 7.72 in the finals to break the mark. The time by Williams gives him the second fastest time in the world according to IAAF.
The Cougars dominated the 60m dash competition by qualifying six individual racers in the field of eight runners who competed in the finals. Sophomore Cameron Burrell (6.65) and junior LeShon Collins (6.66) raced within one one-hundredth of a second of each other to finish 1-2. Those two times are tops in the NCAA and No. 2 and No.3 in the world. Junior James Arnett completed the sweep for Houston with a third place, personal record, 6.84.
Samantha Taylor scored Houston's second individual championship of the day when she finished 1-2 with teammate A'Nease Linnear in the women's shot put. Taylor threw a 14.08 while Linnear tossed a personal best 14.02m.
The Cougars' final win in the field events came from sophomore thrower Cameron Cornelius. Trailing Hayden Baillio of Austin Simply Fit by nearly a meter coming into the final throw, Cornelius tossed a 18.65 to beat his indoor personal record by almost a full meter and win the event.
Houston then got wins from seniors Tori Williams, in the 200m dash (25.09), and Brittany Kinney, in the triple jump (12.07m).
The Cougars finished the evening in come-from-behind fashion en route to winning the women's 4x400 meter relay. Junior sprinter and final-leg Mayorca Young took the baton with her team in third place and raced an incredible final-400 meters to claim victory.
Overall, Houston set 24 personal records and saw nine student-athletes make collegiate personal records in new events.
