When I returned to Houston from active duty in the fall of 1963 the first thing I did was become active in Cougar football. I got to know the staff, attended practices and fan luncheons. Talked college football with lawyers, judges and business types downtown. One of the first things I heard is that U of H were a bunch of outlaws. We weren't supposed to be successful because we weren't a part of the "club"-the SWC. I attended the game in Austin where we played UT to a 20-20 tie, was at Michigan State when we brought the Spartans down. But we weren't supposed to do that so we had to be "outlaws". Then we were the unwashed because we recruited black players. Then we got into the "club" and we were pariahs because we could not be winning the SWC three out of our first 4 years unless we were somehow "cheating". Then came the R & S and we were the desperadoes who ran up the score. And so it went. Powers that be insured we would know our place by keeping us out of any P-5 conference. And as long as we showed ineptitude with HCs such as Helton, Dimel and Levine we were accepted. Accepted as long as we knew our place. We rose up under CTH who is now with the elite in Austin. No sins there in lying to players and our university. But now we viewed as outlaws again by the supporters of a school who was quick to hire someone off the Baylor staff because we hired KB.
Sorry I don't buy the sanctimony. I saw the cheating done by others during our SWC days and I can't miss the hipocracy of others in doing worse then we are supposed to have done that justify the "outlaw" label.
