It was University of Houston night at the Show yesterday.

Along with a few folks who I know lurk the board, I attended a reception before the Rodeo performance with some UH and Rodeo higher ups. (I was holding up the bottom of the importance strata.)

Renu spoke and was simply an incredible spokesman for the good things happening at our University in a crowd that was made up of some fairly prominent people in town. Just terrific.

A couple of vignettes to give you flavor. She started by talking about how she'd only been on the job a few weeks when she was told that she'd be in the Grand Entry for UH night. Told that she'd ride in a carriage, she asked what the last Chancellors had done and, when informed that they had ridden horses, quickly announced that that's what she'd do too.

Then, she said that, having ridden a horse for the last eight years and last night her ninth, she wanted to celebrate her tenth year next year by riding an elephant in the Grand Entry. That got a great laugh.

Later on she talked about having lived in Florida for 22 years, but having been in Texas for the last 8, she's convinced that, in a prior life, she was a Texan.

Both of those stories are especially funny when you think about where she's from.

As many of you know, I had some doubts about Renu early on but the proof is in the pudding.

One more thing. It's my sense that somewhere in the last few years she's crossed over from thinking about her next job to thinking that she and Suresh are here for good.
