. . . in 1976, after beating Baylor in the first game of year, we went to Gainesville and were absolutely crushed by Florida 49-14. Literally, run out of the stadium . . . with the best defensive player in college football on our team, another guy who lead the nation in INTs at one CB, and 5-6 guys on defense who made first team all SWC once or twice. We weren't ever in the game. Out and out embarrassed.
Florida finished 8-4 and in a three-way tie for third in the SEC.
We made one personnel change the next week, replacing Don Sebastian with Elvis Bradley at SS.
We came back the next week beat #9 A&M, won the SWC (which was a tad tougher then than the AAC is today), beat #4 Maryland in the Cotton Bowl, and finished 4th in the final polls, our highest ever.
Now obviously Major isn't likely to end up in the college football HOF like our HC then and I've got serious questions about whether D'Onofrio's name should be spoken in the same breath as Coach Todd's, but the fact is that it is still just one game no matter how awful we looked.
