Panicked and bought tickets before the Tulane game for Navy. 2 seats in Sec. 107, row 6. $100 a piece. Got killed on the price, but ... wanted to take my WWII Pacific Theatre Navy Vet dad to the game.
I wore Red. He wore Bluejeans, bluejean jacket, Navy hat, Navy insignia.
Got to seats an hour before the game. Dad walked up to every Navy guy he saw, thanked them for their service and exchanged pleasantries ... or war stories ... whatever more appropriate.
Loved being directly behind the bench. Defensive coaches were fun to watch each time guys came off the field. Reggie Chevis and Chauntez Jackson limited on the field, but were great on the sidelines. Grant Stuard is a total goof (dad wanted to trim his hair up a bit).
Juice box on the sidelines not like last year's, but grad assistants (or just assistants) have some fun with it. A few of the young bucks on defense were clearly frustrated that playing time was limited for them this week (Anineh comes to mind).
Like everyone else, frustrated with first half offensive play calling, particularly when it was clear that Dunbar and Bonner could dominate their DBs. Also unclear as to why we keep a TE on the field. Never used in passing game. Not strong enough contributors to offensive run blocking to be worth the lost inside threat. That said, clearly successful adjustments were made at halftime, because both units won in the second half. Equally impressive, Coogs didn't hurt themselves with penalties against a Navy team that is rarely penalized.
Surprised not to read more props for Steven Dunbar. Kid has been a huge player in his UH career. Far more speed than credited with, and a great catch radius. Bonner is human stickum. We will miss them both a ton next year, regardless of the depth on roster.
Thought our ability to tackle was much improved this week. Appreciated the lack of panic in the staff when field position and turnovers absolutely worked us in the first 30 minutes.
Bottom line. Had a great time. Drove home to Kentucky excited about our future. Hope not to be starting over with a new staff this offseason given all the movement ahead in college football.
Capped off the day by listening to Texas Tech radio deep into the Mississippi night. CTH lost confidence in his running game, then lost the game with inexplicable play calling at the end. I don't take any joy in Texas losing (Texas grads rarely do).
But I did smile recognizing that Houston once again had a better record than the boys in Orange.
Should have been a one-loss season. But, hell, I still enjoyed it. In fact, looking forward to next season and at least a trip or two back home to watch the Crimson and White (or crimson and crimson, or cream and cream, or black on black).
