On Saturday, May 17, 1997, we lost to UAB in the first semifinal of the CUSA tourney. We had our rematch later in the day and won the game, 10-8. We were about to play for our first conference tourney title since 1951 (Missouri Valley).
Back in Houston, one Think Cotton and one El Gordo were drinking at Luling City Market when they decided on a whim to fly to New Orleans for the final. Those aholes were there for a really big game in our history.
We came out Sunday on fire and beat UNCC 22-7 and got sent to the Baton Rouge Regional. It was the last year of the 48-team field and we went 0&2 (my first UH baseball game was our first round loss to South Alabama). We went on to win 3 of our next 5 regionals.
Beating UAB in that second game on Saturday led us to our first conference championship in 46 years. Since then, we've won 8 total conference titles, made 10 regionals, and won 4 of them.
