Pretty much, more of the same that we have seen so far this spring. I did finally get a look at the 4th linebacker when the Cougars are not in the nickel package (which we have seen a lot in our window of time). The alignment I saw had Matthew Adams and Emeke Egbule on the inside with Steven Taylor and Tyus Bowser on the outside (in this instance both at the line of scrimmage). So it appears Egbule is the one they are dropping off when adding the nickel back.
Probably not a first time for it to happen but I saw Cam Malveaux working a little as a stand-up end (like Bowser) in certain situations and even doing a couple linebacker drills with Tyus Bowser. Surely it is a situational thing but worth noting in case they show it some later. I want to say I remember this happening last year but don't kill me if I am misremembering that. They did flash this alignment once or twice against air before practice started so it is something they are working on.
The offensive line was a little different this time with the first reps looking like (L-R) Josh Jones, Mason Denley, Noble, Eloph and Rodgers. Second unit was (L-R) Oliver, Josh Thomas, Noble, Long and Jarrid Williams
Receivers looked the same with Dunbar, Johnson split to one side and Bonner on the other. McCloskey was the TE again and Duke Catalon joined Greg Ward in the backfield. Josh Burrell came on at one point (assuming Mccloskey came off) and unit here was Postma and Kokuma joined by Alex Leslie at TE, Mark and Samples on the left with Linell Bonner on the right again.
The first defense looked pretty similar again, Williams and Davis were the safeties again with Winchester and Joel Williams on the right side and Howard Wilson on the left. Adams and Taylor were the inside backers and Bowser on the rush end. Up front though today saw Nick Thurman grouped with Jerard Carter (who coach Giles mentioned Friday as a guy having a good spring and pushing up the depth chart some) and Malveaux. B.J. Singleton was running with the 2s alongside Zach Vaughan and one guy I missed. The second team secondary (hope that wasn't as confusing as it felt) had Andrew Robertson and J.J. Dallas on the right side with a walk-on not listed on the left. The safeties were Darius Gilbert and Terrell Williams and the linebackers were Ralph Harvey Jr (rush LB) D'Juan Hines and Egbule.
The two kickers battling during a live drill was Ty Cummings and Joel Scarbrough but again, it has been mentioned before that there is at least one more coming in this summer to compete.
Recruits worth mentioning:
Signees Oliver, Fleming and Wilder were all on hand. 2017 La Porte LB Terrell Bernard was out again and keep an ear out for a TE named Devin Miller from New Jersey who is quickly getting into the mix for the Cougars. Sources say he is in Houston and visiting UH at the moment and we will let him clear campus to see if he picks up an offer and follow up to see just how serious his recruitment has become since coming down.
