Against Rice our special teams contributed 14 points to the Owls through a combination of a fumbled punt and missed kicks. Fortunately, we were playing Rice and were able to use the 2nd half to overcome those special team lapses.
Poor special teams play is [1] a carry over from last season, [2] a "luxury" that we cannot afford if we want to have an outstanding season, [3] will likely end up costing us a game we otherwise could have won, and [4] is, in my opinion, due to our not having a separate, dedicated special teams coach.
About [4] above, where is Tony Levine now, when we need him most? OK. I already know the answer is Chick-Fil-A, but Tony Levine was the best special teams coach we ever had at UH in my opinion. When you have a coach half of whose job is to coach special teams and the other half is coaching tight ends, having half-ass special teams play is a predictable result. And that's what we've got.
