New York, NY (New York Athletic Club) -- The American Athletic Conference held its 2014 media day for men's basketball day today; and, head coach Kelvin Sampson and guards LJ Rose and Jherrod Stiggers represented the University of Houston at the event.
During an interview with
Dick Weiss (member of the college basketball writers' Hall-of-Fame), Coach Sampson answered why he decided to leave the NBA's Houston Rockets (as associate head coach) to become head coach at the University of Houston.
"I needed to rebuild a program. I needed to go somewhere where they needed me," Sampson said matter-of-factly. "Some of the schools (that inquired about hiring Sampson) were going to be good because they have everything.
"Houston. No facilities. Poor fan base. Not a basketball culture. And, there's no guarantees that I can do it.
"We're building a $25 million development center right now. Every day I drive by it. It's exciting. It's going to help. Kids today are visual. They want to see. They don't want to hear about it. They want to see it.
"When we bring a kid on campus now, we show them 'we're going to have our own courts. We're building one for men's and women's basketball; but, we're going to have our practice court. We'll have an NBA-style locker room. We'll have a players' lounge; dining area; a film room that's ours. We don't share those things. The only things we'll share with the women's team is the training room and the weight room.
"Why is that important? It speaks to commitment," Sampson continued. "Kids want to know your program is important. What Houston basketball has been in the past is not important. It's not important. Look at the things we can control. We can control our facilities. And, our facilities will dictate the level we can recruit; and, recruiting helps you win; and, helping win brings fans to the games. That's why I'm excited about building this program. We can do this! We can do this. This is not a pipe dream."
After speaking with Hoops Weiss, Coach Sampson spoke with The HRR and elaborated on the importance of having top level facilities on the University of Houston Campus.
"Hofheinz hasn't changed since Dream (Hakeem Olajuwon) left. Or Clyde." Sampson lamented. "So, when we sat down and talked about coming here (to the University of Houston) and taking over this job, my priority was facilities. We have to get better. The basketball coach at the University of Houston cannot be at a competitive disadvantage because of facilities.
