Simple Request

Could someone at Rivals please jiggle the program so that if we decide to actually read a post by someone who has been marked "Ignore," the ignored post will then open up directly, instead of taking us back to the top of the thread. Every time we do that, we have to then scroll all the way back down to the ignored post we have decided to read. What a waste of time - and very annoying!

Defensive stats

Coogs are . . .

#5 in scoring defense.

#14 in total defense.

#7 in pass defense

#4 in passes intercepted

#6 in turnovers gained

Just amazing! The program had sort of become synonymous with bad defense. Hope we can either drive a Brinks truck up to Coach Gibbs' door or even conceivably name him HC. In two short years, he's engraving his name in the list of all-time great Cougar coordinators, and that includes folks such as Bum Phillips, Melvin Robertson, Dana Holgerson, and John Jenkins.

The refs

Just how bad do you have to be to have two inadvertent whistles kill plays in one half? I have never seen this happen in one game and have gone seasons not seeing this happen once. What is more amazing is that neither play was remotely deceptive or had a player near being on the ground. The one they blew while we were on offense killed a drive on a spectacular play by Ward and forced us to redo another 3rd and long. The one called against USF they at least got most of the credit for their play since it happened during the run, but did have to convert a short yardage play to get the first. That is so inexcusable on their parts and I hope they get reprimanded.

The offense

It really looks to me as if Bush has had time to work with Ward and install an offense for him. The result? The offense is going backward. Still a lot of football to play, but USF knows full well he's going to run the QB draw up the gut. He's been successful when he improvised, not run a set offense. Ain't workin'.

Defense gave up 25 yards in 1st quarter.

5 and 0

Number of penalty yards and turnovers. You have to credit that to coaching. Not advocating one way or the other but the fact is we have seen improvement. O line has improved considerably. Passing game obvious deficiency. The people calling for a return of okorn right now are nuts. Why change when we are undefeated with Ward? I think Ward can improve as a thrower with better coaching and strength. The key next year will be a new OC and objectivity in the spring. Is Hicks still scheduled to enroll at midterm?

Ran into Mr. Mean . . .

at Frenchy's this afternoon. Spoke briefly. He actually seems like a very nice guy, and he appreciated me saying I was a fan. Unfortunately, he was wearing an Aggy 12th Man shirt. I know his daughter plays there, but, nonetheless, something about that struck me, and I was thinking of writing a lengthy, in-depth post about UH's place in the college sports universe compared to what it was when Larry was in school, whether we could get back to that, and if so, what we'd need to do. But I decided against it. You can thank me later.

SOS, P5, scheduling..

From time to time we mentioN one important component in becoming a p5 school, scheduling. Now that the playoff format looks at OOC games and better opponents we have a chance to appear on better schedules. Unfortunately, we have not had a priority like our rivals have. For example, ECU plays Florida,VaTech and Byu in 2015. In out years they play VaTech 3 times, S Carolina, west Va., NC State and north Carolina. They also face Ohio St. Nebraska.

UCF plays Stanford and S. Carolina. In out years they scheduled Mich. Maryland, and Tex. Purdue and Indiana.

We have Louisville and Bandy next year. In out years we play a neutral and away game with Oklahoma. In out years we have Az., TexasTech and Kansas.

Something is wrong. I read when I first joined the discussion, we would only schedule home and away, 1-1 games. It's my opinion that there are 3-5 teams that 0-2 contracts or 1-2 contracts that would give us a net positive if we play well and win our share. If we are to be considered P5 material we need this exposure.

Your views will be appreciated.

Kelvin Sampson AAC Media Day

New York, NY (New York Athletic Club) -- The American Athletic Conference held its 2014 media day for men's basketball day today; and, head coach Kelvin Sampson and guards LJ Rose and Jherrod Stiggers represented the University of Houston at the event.

During an interview with Dick Weiss (member of the college basketball writers' Hall-of-Fame), Coach Sampson answered why he decided to leave the NBA's Houston Rockets (as associate head coach) to become head coach at the University of Houston.

"I needed to rebuild a program. I needed to go somewhere where they needed me," Sampson said matter-of-factly. "Some of the schools (that inquired about hiring Sampson) were going to be good because they have everything.

"Houston. No facilities. Poor fan base. Not a basketball culture. And, there's no guarantees that I can do it.

"We're building a $25 million development center right now. Every day I drive by it. It's exciting. It's going to help. Kids today are visual. They want to see. They don't want to hear about it. They want to see it.

"When we bring a kid on campus now, we show them 'we're going to have our own courts. We're building one for men's and women's basketball; but, we're going to have our practice court. We'll have an NBA-style locker room. We'll have a players' lounge; dining area; a film room that's ours. We don't share those things. The only things we'll share with the women's team is the training room and the weight room.

"Why is that important? It speaks to commitment," Sampson continued. "Kids want to know your program is important. What Houston basketball has been in the past is not important. It's not important. Look at the things we can control. We can control our facilities. And, our facilities will dictate the level we can recruit; and, recruiting helps you win; and, helping win brings fans to the games. That's why I'm excited about building this program. We can do this! We can do this. This is not a pipe dream."

After speaking with Hoops Weiss, Coach Sampson spoke with The HRR and elaborated on the importance of having top level facilities on the University of Houston Campus.

"Hofheinz hasn't changed since Dream (Hakeem Olajuwon) left. Or Clyde." Sampson lamented. "So, when we sat down and talked about coming here (to the University of Houston) and taking over this job, my priority was facilities. We have to get better. The basketball coach at the University of Houston cannot be at a competitive disadvantage because of facilities.
