Last night amidst a horrible third quarter, my Twitter feed began to fill up with gems from Matt Thomas and others:
  • Glad I didn't waste money on season tickets.
  • Tillman screwed us with the lack of coaching search.
  • How can this team be this poorly conditioned?
  • Time to begin collecting buy out dollars.
All this on top of ticket sales of less than 30,000 and a stadium that emptied in the 3rd quarter despite the score being closely contested.

I've been on this site and the other since the Sumlin era. I have been a fan since the 1970's.
I have constantly noted that nothing brings our fan base together like wanting to fire a head coach. That's our specialty.

But I thought today, maybe I missed something, maybe the program is horribly underperforming our history. So the first thing I did was compare the first two years for all of our coaches since the Yeoman era.

Herman (lyin' Tom Herman) ... 22-4 ... .846
Sumlin (jive Kevin Scumlin) ... 18 - 9 ... .666
Applewhite ... (Orangeblood Opie) ... 11-6 ... 647
Jenkins ... 14-8 ... .636
Pardee ... 13 - 9 - 1 ... .565
Levine ... 13-12 ... .520
Yeoman ... 9-12 ... .428
Briles ... 10-14 ... .416
Dimel ... 3 - 19 ... .136
Helton ... 2-19-1 ... .100

Also read that the game was boring and that the team isn't exciting to watch ...

#3 Team Offense
#16 in Rushing Yards Average Per Game
$14 in Rushing Yards Average Per Game
# 4 in Total Points

We hate the D-Coordinator - in part because fans from the U told us to. He doesn't blitz enough. We don't create enough turnovers. We can't stop the run. We can't stop the pass.

The stats I found were too rosy -- not going to post what I don't believe myself. Our defense isn't great, despite having one of the five best players in college football. That said, Gibbs defenses were just as easily gashed. We lived for the takeaway ... which we got 3 last night ... and should have had 6.

As for recruiting, sure, we have taken a step back. There is only one Tom Herman. And he had the benefit of Big 12 invitation seemingly on the horizon. But Major continues to recruit better than most of his peers despite lack of P5 status. Plus our kids are graduating. Plus we are clean.

I;m not suggesting that Major is perfect. But he has already proven that he will make adjustments as needed to make the team successful. He isn't a self-promoter. He isn't in a hurry to find his next spot. He is doing better than most ... and when I looked at the list above ... I was reminded how fortunate we have been to be this successful for the better part of 50 years.

Try to enjoy it.
