The University of Houston (UH) is building a new building (Health and Biomedical Sciences Building-2) which includes a first floor space that has been designed to house a primary medical care with integrated mental health care clinic for the purpose of housing a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that will provide care to the population of the neighboring Third Ward community as well as to UH employees and staff.
The clinic space includes 11,000 square feet, 14 exam rooms (2 of which can be used for procedures), 3 dental operatories, a room for plain film x-rays, and a room for mammography. There is a separate space on the first floor for a pharmacy; the pharmacy will serve both FQHC patients and students receiving care from the UH Student Health Service which will be located on the second floor of the building.
In addition to the above mentioned health care services, there will be separate clinical care areas on the first floor for specialized behavioral health services to be provided by the University of Houston Department of Psychology, Department of Psychological, Health and Learning Sciences, and Graduate School of Social Work; and on the second floor for specialized disease prevention and health promotion services provided by the Department of Health and Human Performance, the Texas Obesity Research Center, and ultimately a new Physical Therapy training program.
These specialized services will be available to the FQHC patients on a referral basis, and patients cared for in these specialized clinics who need primary medical care services will be offered referral to the FQHC for ongoing primary care.
The University of Houston has a number of existing health professions education programs in its colleges of Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy and Social Work. The College of Pharmacy will be housed in the HBSB-2 building, as will the College of Nursing graduate programs.
UH is planning to open a new medical school in 2019, which would be housed on the upper floors of the HBSB-2 building during its first two years of operation.
We envision that the FQHC clinic will provide a place for UH faculty (physicians, nurse practitioners, clinical psychologists, social workers, clinical pharmacists, etc.) to practice on a part-time basis, and a place for UH health professions students (medicine, nursing, clinical psychology, social work, pharmacy and optometry) to receive some of their clinical training. The clinic could eventually become a training site for Family Medicine resident physicians, as well.
